Responsive Web Design

Today everyone is using a different device, browser and screen size when browsing the web. Be it a large format display with multiple monitors, an ipad or tablet and most smart phones, keeping track of all the possible sizes web templates can be viewed is almost impossible. Responsive website design is the solution in most cases.
A responsive designed website means it responds easily with all screen sizes and devices. This is mostly done by re-organizing content on the page using some CSS and HTML, and creating the best possible user experience on the site. Responsive web design is not a single piece of technology, but rather, a collection of techniques and ideas. It is a series of procedures leading to a solution of the multiple display and format problem. Some of them are mentioned below.

Fluid Grids
Fluid grids go a few steps beyond the traditional liquid layout. Instead of designing a layout based on rigid pixels or arbitrary percentage values, a fluid grid is more carefully designed in terms of proportions. This way, when a layout is squeezed onto a tiny mobile device or stretched across a huge screen, all of the elements in the layout will resize their widths in relation to one another.
Fluid grids are a very important part of creating a responsive design, but they can only take us so far. When the width of the browser becomes too narrow, the design can start to severely break down. Fortunately, responsive design has taken care of this problem by using media queries.

Media Queries
The second part of responsive design is CSS3 media queries, which currently enjoy decent support across many modern browsers. CSS3 media queries basically allow collecting data about the site visitor and using it to conditionally apply CSS styles. Using a series of media queries it is possible to work up towards larger resolutions.

Flexible Images
When altering the design for different devices, consideration must be made for creating multiple versions of the graphics. This can greatly affect the speed at which the design loads on smaller screens, and gives the opportunity to customize each version of the graphic.
The different sizing and cropping choices, in addition to the varying amounts of compression are applied to each set of images.
